The game in brief
Pickleball is a popular paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played on a smaller court with a pickleball net, similar to a tennis net, it is suitable for individuals of all ages and abilities. The game involves two or four players using solid paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net, aiming to score points and outmanoeuvre their opponents.
The game can be played indoors and outdoors. West Herts Wizards’ sessions are indoors at Berkhamsted Leisure Centre, using badminton courts with a dedicated pickleball net.
The court dimensions are 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, with a non-volley zone (commonly referred to as the "kitchen") that extends 7 feet on either side of the net. The rules of pickleball are relatively simple, making it easy for beginners to grasp the basics quickly.
The game begins with an underhand serve diagonally over the net. The ball must clear the non-volley zone and land within the boundaries on the opposite side of the court. Once the ball is in play, the players hit the ball back and forth, with each team allowed to let the ball bounce once on their side before returning it (the two-bounce rule). The objective is to hit the ball in a way that makes it difficult for the opponent to return, ultimately winning points when the opposing team fails to return the ball or commits a fault.
Pickleball is known for its slower pace compared to tennis, making it easier on the joints and more accessible for older players and those with limited mobility. The sport can be played in singles or doubles format, allowing players to choose the level of competition and social interaction they desire. With its blend of physical activity, strategic thinking, and social engagement, pickleball continues to attract a diverse range of enthusiasts looking for an inclusive and enjoyable sport
Where can I get equipment?
You can’t buy equipment on the high street yet but we are lucky enough to have an online store in the UK that stocks everything you need (paddles, balls, nets, bags, etc). The UK Pickleball Shop has been trading since 2015 and the owners are very knowledgeable. They also have some special offers for pickleballEngland members, and offer a discount to Wizards members.
